The world around us has incredible depth, but we tend to only ever notice the tip of the iceberg. Busyness, stress, and the inability to live in the present moment make our lives shallow.

It’s when we manage to slow down, to clear our minds and surroundings, when we start noticing what’s under the surface.

One example of this is coincidences that seem meaningfully related but appear to have no cause. Psychologist Carl Jung called these synchronicities.

Examples:

  • You thought about a friend you haven’t seen in over a decade and suddenly you run into her the same afternoon.

  • Seeing a specific symbol or object repeatedly in different contexts, which then plays a significant role in an important life decision or event.

  • A sudden message giving an answer to something when you’ve been lost.

When we start paying more attention, we notice how frequent these can be—and how they can guide us in the right direction.
