Why do you keep doing the things you are doing?
That´s one tough question that might be asked to us at one point in our lives.
Would you be able to answer it?
Could you?
Why do you keep snoozing the alarm on your phone when you know you need to wake up?
Why do you eat breakfast at the same time every day?
Or work on your special project?
Or work out at a specific moment?
Why do you keep those habits in check… and others left better off alone?
Everything we do has a reason to be done: either we are the people that do certain actions or we are the people that don´t do those certain actions.
That´s the best way to describe what discipline looks like.
In the words of philosopher and entrepreneur, Ryan Holiday:
“Discipline is a muscle: which muscle are you building? The one that says I do what I say… or the one that says I make excuses?”
We are all able to construct discipline in our lives.
Because sticking to certain actions despite any given amount of time is a sign of discipline.
There´s a catch: discipline needs to be good for us.
Not good by us.
Meaning: we should not aim to be disciplined enough to do the things that do harm to us… even if they seem beneficial in the short term.
We need to focus our efforts on balancing the things we need to do in our lives.
We must train our discipline to look out for good actions and stick to them.
No why´s asked.
Friday, 7:00 pm. Long day of work, exhaustion flowing in my veins… not feeling quite interested enough in working out.
I found myself in that rabbit hole of thoughts: should I just skip my training session today?
And just as I was thinking about it in my head… something deep inside of me pushed that thought away.
I knew I could be the person… in fact, I knew I AM the person who can and has developed his muscles to act on the right things.
Right things take time. Energy. Will.
But I knew I have trained that muscle enough times to be ready to face times like this one.
So what did I do?
I went and worked out.
Simple mind-muscle connection right there.
If you want to build your discipline muscle and be an overall better achiever…
You need to embrace the persona you´d want to be.
If you want to run a marathon, you´d need to figure out how a person, that runs incredibly far distances, behaves, acts, thinks, and prepares every day.
You need to embrace that persona so that you can be confident enough to put the reps in and build that running discipline in your life.
It´s the best secret to start changing the way your mind approaches challenges and change.
Your best weapon in a blurry world is a firm and solid discipline of mind, soul, and body.
These three pillars make you thrive in any given scenario.
So go out and start being the person who achieves and does what he/she says he/she is capable of doing.
Stay hard.
