Learn to embrace uncertainty. Old lessons won´t take you far enough.
It´s time for an update, comrade!
Today´s chat was started by a simple prompt given in episode #590 of the Modern Wisdom podcast with Chris Williamson. Chris was having a solid conversation with one of the most disruptive authors of our current time, Mark Manson.
Manson was going down memory lane, explaining how success changed his vision about said topic. He then added this small phrase: your past won´t carry you in your future; then Chris rapidly answered: what brought you here, won´t get you there.
I paused the podcast for a few minutes.
Then grabbed my phone and started writing the last piece of information my ears had heard: what brought you here won´t get you there.
I had heard that same phrase before, but suddenly it had a greater meaning for me.
Our past is a BIG conditioner for how we are feeling, what decisions we take, how we talk to strangers, or even how we respond when something goes off.
On the other hand, our future is based on our present, right? Our present is based on our past.
Or that´s one way to think about it.
Our past teaches us lessons, but these lessons won´t produce new ones, not even if applied. We create new ones through uncertainty. We generate new lessons thanks to the guidance of past lessons.
Past lessons guide your senses and your ability to handle uncertainty in a way that feels familiar sometimes. But future teachings won´t be available unless you take the leap toward discomfort.
The people you knew… won’t get you there.
The memories you had… won´t bring you a better future.
The tools that worked before, won’t work at an optimal level for where you want to get at.
The memories won’t create new ones. They won’t craft value outside of the one they already have.
That’s why we learn from the past. We seek lessons, or we at least should. Because if we are seeking a secret formula to recreate in advance any given scenario… it’ll be a totally different vision.
Manson had to rearrange his life, had to use new tools and systems to produce better writing, he had to distance himself from given social conditions for achieving better ones. We can all do these changes.
If the strategy worked for a while but isn´t now, you change the strategy, not the goal.
If the feeling felt right but has so much weight now, you change your approach to sensing it, not its meaning.
You need your past, but your past doesn´t need you. Keep that promise for your future.
⤴️ The Weekly Update
📚 Schedule your distractions, do not let them dictate your actions. Cal Newport makes this emphasis to deal with the current distractions our world offers: if we want lesser distractors, we need to choose them wisely.
Instead of giving focused work rapid diving sessions in our day, we make focus a constant value, and distraction the minimal exceptions.
💡 Love is spelled T-I-M-E. Choose wisely. This phrase can hit hard for many of us. Even if we are sure of the righteousness of our actions, the time we give to the things we really love in life, to the people we really love in life is all that matters.
So next time you are arguing in your head whether to take the next big project, whether to tackle the next decision; be sure to be completely honest: Am I spending my time because of love? Of for love?
🎙️ Episode #351 of The Danny Miranda Podcast ft. Sean Oulashin. Yup, my man
made it!It felt so good to hear this chat: pure empathy and funny stories in a flow of thoughtful reminders of our own human condition, our power of communication, and the importance of facing the arguably painful scars along the way. I highly encourage you to give it a hearing.
