Hi there.
You see, in this last period of the year, you are in a rush to complete a goal of yours or a project.
Or maybe you are looking for inspiration to plan ahead all of your new endeavors for the year to come.
So I wanted to ask this question: what´s the “work” you´ve been avoiding?
Seriously, what is it?
Lately, it could be putting in the time and effort to be with your family.
It could be how much attention you give to your friends or your partner.
How many small and even hard talks have you been engaging with?
How much progress you´ve made over the different projects you have in hand?
All of those represent the work you´ve been putting in throughout the year. Or the work you´ve been avoiding.
And it´s not bad to avoid work. Not in a sense of productivity, but in a sense of choosing which door you open and which you don´t.
You can´t handle all of what´s on your plate all the time.
It´s too reckless. Too dangerous. You need to pick a few main focus areas.
But what about the times you neglect the work in your life that needs to be done?
Now we are talking.
If you know you have to do a thing and you don´t go and do it, you aren´t even lying to yourself about your ambitions, goals, or even abilities to work on any given action.
You are damaging yourself.
Your identity.
You are saying out loud:
“I´m the type of person who doesn´t feel confident enough to have the sheer discipline to go out of bed and focus on the main thing that would make my life better at least for that day.”
We don´t want to be that person. It´s such a hard reality to live with.
Doing the work takes much less energy than avoiding the work.
That´s because you aren´t cluttering your mind with useless preoccupations, anxieties and so many thoughts about the should haves or coulds… you simply act.
You act and you choose to have at least 8 hours of stress-free, focused life for just 2 or 4 hours of work done.
That´s how much your “real productivity” will elevate.
And just think about the wellness that comes from speaking with your parents or loved ones about those situations that are creating a barrier among yourselves.
What about sending that email you´ve postponed for too long?
Creating that product, starting that entrepreneurial idea or project.
Studying for that exam you know it won´t be a nice ride.
Remember, if you commit yourself to doing the work, not planning, not dreaming… actually doing it, you´ll be much safer, grateful, and grown that you could ever be.
I´ll leave you with one of my favorite reminders to go out there and do the work I told myself I would do.
“Here is a list of things that are not doing the thing:
Preparing to do the thing isn't doing the thing.
Scheduling time to do the thing isn't doing the thing.
Making a to-do list for the thing isn't doing the thing.
Telling people you're going to do the thing isn't doing the thing.
Messaging friends who may or may not be doing the thing isn't doing the thing.
Writing a banger tweet about how you're going to do the thing isn't doing the thing.
Hating on yourself for not doing the thing isn't doing the thing.
Hating on other people who have done the thing isn't doing the thing.
Hating on the obstacles in the way of doing the thing isn't doing the thing.
Fantazising about all of the adoration you'll receive once you do the thing isn't doing the thing.
Reading about how to do the thing isn't doing the thing.
Reading about how other people did the thing isn't doing the thing.
Reading this essay isn't doing the thing.
The only thing that is doing the thing is doing the thing.”
Peace,
- Alex
