The Craftmanship We All Look For
The source of energy and purpose is inherited to us. We just need to discover it.
I want to start this chat with a question: would you rather find fulfillment in work or in your free time?
I´m guessing the majority of you would choose free time over work time, right?
Don´t get me wrong, there´s nothing wrong with having some free-up space in your life.
It´s the measure that keeps your sanity going.
But when I´m asking you to reflect on the question above, I´m searching for a specific valuable answer.
When we perform any type of “work” or activity, we expect results. And that´s comprehensible, given the fact we are trading our time for the piece of labor we are trying to craft.
But, what would change if instead of considering the measurement of the outputs of our work as a rule to decide whether our craft is valuable and fulfilling, we instead measure the whole sense and ideal of the craft itself?
Something so cliché as enjoying the process, but I believe it´s different. Because in every process or journey, you expect a destination. With this new idea, we are deciding to treat our destination as the process, and the process as a discovery of meaning, not a construction of it.
Hubert Dreyfus and Sean Dorrance Kelly, in their book named All Things Shining, state that the world has changed and that now meaning although it´s being constructed, it requires purpose to exist, whereas, in ancient times, meaning was just meaning. The raw connection between oneself and their existence, not purpose for achieving something different as a form of fulfillment.
They reflected on this for so long, and they did it. They came up with the following reasoning: if in the past, meaning was found in the vision of the craft itself, some higher purpose than just fighting for a country, producing “x” product, or creating this new piece of art; today´s society has lost its sense of sacredness.
Why is this happening? I suspect multiple factors are causing this sense of ambiguity and unreasoned purpose, especially among young people, yet one of the main ones may be the lack of directed concentration.
At work, how many times have you lacked energy to continue the labor? At school, how many times have you forgotten the most important detail for you to catch up on the assignment? At home, how much of a vivid conversation can you have with the people around you without falling off the conversation?
There is a lack of focus because there is a lack of purpose. If we want to tackle our day, enjoy our life, or get 1% better each day, we need to value the craft. Not the goal, not the plan of action.
The small and giant meanings the craft calls you to look for. Are you making your studies for the grade? Or for achieving a dream career or working lifestyle? Are you reading this because you feel the need to be productive or because you want growth to be part of your life?
We just need to find the real meaning and intentions behind the actions we are doing. We do not ignore it, we understand it and shape the vision of it.
Like good craftmanship, we create art for pure magic.
