Episode #590 of the Modern Wisdom podcast.
Chris Williamson was having a solid conversation with one of the most disruptive authors of our current time, Mark Manson.
Manson was going down memory lane, explaining how success changed his vision about life, aberrations, society, relationships… and everything in between.
He then added this small phrase: your past won´t carry you in your future; then Chris rapidly answered: what brought you here, won´t get you there.
I paused the podcast for a few minutes.
Then grabbed my phone and started writing the last piece of information my ears had heard: what brought you here won´t get you there.
I had heard that same phrase before, but suddenly it had a greater meaning for me.
Our past is a BIG conditioner for how are we feeling, what decisions we take, how we talk to strangers or even how we respond when something goes off.
On the other hand, our future is based on our present, right? Our present is based on our past.
Or that´s one way to think about it.
Our past teaches us lessons, but these lessons won´t produce new ones, not even if applied.
We create new ones through uncertainty.
We generate new lessons thanks to the guidance of past lessons.
Past lessons guide your senses and your ability to handle uncertainty in a way that feels familiar sometimes. But future teachings won´t be available unless you take the leap towards discomfort.
The people you knew… won’t get you there.
The memories you had… won´t bring you a better future.
The tools that worked before, won’t work at an optimal level for where you want to get at.
The memories wont create new ones. They won’t craft value outside of the one they already have.
That’s why we learn from the past.
We seek lessons, or we at least should.
Because if we are seeking a secret formula to recreate in advance any given scenario… it’ll be a totally different vision.
Manson had to rearrange his life, had to use new tools and systems to produce better writing, he had to distance from given social conditions for achieving better ones.
We can all do these changes.
If the strategy worked for a while, but isn´t now, you change the strategy, not the goal.
If the feeling felt right but has so much weight now, you change your approach to sensing it, not it´s meaning.
You need your past, but your past doesn´t need you.
Keep that promise for your future self.
