Adversity Doesn´t Build Character. It Reveals It.
The call you´ve been waiting for. It´s day one friend.
Have you ever heard the phrase: “Money isn´t bad in itself. Money simply reveals your true character.”
Well, if you have (and even if you haven´t heard it), you´ll love this turnaround of the exact same phrase.
Just hear to what Tim Ferris has to say about this:
“Adversity doesn´t build character; it reveals it. Related: Money doesn´t change you, it reveals who you are when you no longer have to be nice.” - Tim Ferris
This was a refreshing approach. Not just to the money part, although the new addition was quite revealing.
It was a refreshing approach to one of the most talked themes in almost every self-guidance creation space: adversity doesn´t build character. It reveals it.
So, let´s get things straight to the point: adversity is the continuous challenge we as humans live and experience in life. Sometimes we just want to leave it right away, not even feeling like it´s worth our effort, right?
So it is tworst-case scenario right in front of us! If we battle so much to overcome these obstacles, shouldn´t we learn/get something from them?
Indeed. You, me, and every other person get something out of adversity.
We get lessons that if applied correctly, prepare us to level up our fighting skills, tactics, and tricks, opening us to a whole new panorama to explore and seek answers from.
What Tim is referring though is how many of us don´t need any struggle in life for us to be prepared, caring, and conscious humans.
At least not the kind of adversity that makes you want to jump off a cliff (please, don´t).
Adversity reveals character. Meaning, for us to be prepared to fight and walk past our mountains requires previous preparation and previous inner and outer growth.
That´s why adversity can reveal our darkest secrets, our worst nightmares, our most dangerous thoughts, or our unpleasant sides: we hadn´t acknowledged them before.
We hadn´t put in the time to understand and mold our persona.
Our intentions.
Our thoughts.
Our emotions.
Our actions.
Our plans.
We were so focused on getting ahead of life that life got ahead of us, and that was a disturbance that we couldn't manage quite well because of our lack of preparation.
Good news: you are here. You are encouraged and focused on giving self-awareness and intentional living a try, don´t you?
You reading this is the start.
For you to show adversity what your character really looks like.
For you to learn some new things when faced with obstacles.
This is the start and the call you´ve been waiting for.
Don´t let adversity teach you all.
Start preparing. It´s day one. You are off to the best.

Failures and stumbles, they still point us.
It is a sea of voices that it is difficult to move away.
That is why you have to re-connect with them.

I can agree with Tim Ferris' perspective on adversity revealing character. It's a refreshing take on the age-old concept. Life's challenges serve as mirrors, showing us who we truly are and what we need to work on. It's all about self-awareness and intentional growth. Thanks for sharing this insightful post, Alex!
This is good! 👏👏👏👏
